JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) – Rescued animals in Kentuckiana will be getting a helping hand from a new thrift store that will donate all its profits to care for those animals.
The thrift store is called Sophie's Hope, named after a long haired dachshund, who has been through a lot. She was dropped off at a shelter, infested with fleas. She had a back and neck injury and a heart murmur, but after some vet care and a little love, Sophie has bounced back.
"She's about the sweetest thing in the world, so we named the store after her in hopes that people will look at Sophie and know that these dogs can be saved," said Lynda Sylvester, Southern Indiana Rescue volunteer.
Sophie's Hope is located at 3808 Highway 62 in Jeffersonville. It was launched by Sylvester, who has realized caring for these animals does not come cheap. "It all takes money, so we have to come up with ingenious ways to make money and the thrift store is one way," said Sylvester.
100% of sales will go towards helping rescued pups. Southern Indiana Rescue volunteers work closely with the JB Ogle Animal Shelter in Jeffersonville and brand new director Sarah Green.
While the shelter has had its controversy in the last few months, Green says she's ready for a new direction.
"I don't want the community to be fearful of the shelter," said Green. "I want them to want to be there and want to come visit us and want to adopt from us."
She believes working closely with rescue groups is the best way to get as many animals adopted as possible. "I hope people come out and donate to them because it helps Jeffersonville as a community all around, because they help us so much," said Green.
"You know there are a lot of Sophie's out there and they keep coming, so we do need people who have a heart to extend just a little bit of help," said Sylvester.
Sophie's Hope will have its grand opening this Sunday from 2:00 p.m.- 5:00 p.m. Their normal business hours will be Thursday - Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.
