Knights bolt out to early lead, hold on for 90-71 win at UWP

SOMERS, Wisc.—The No. 1 Bellarmine University men's basketball team bolted to a quick 26-4 lead, then held off a second half rally to defeat the Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers 90-71 tonight in a Great Lakes Valley Conference game in DeSimone Gymnasium.

The Knights were near-perfect as they steamrolled the host Rangers in the game's first 10 minutes, hitting better than 80 percent of their shots and playing turnover-free basketball as Braydon Hobbs picked up three early assists to become Bellarmine's all-time leader in steals with 653.

However, after BU took a 31-9 lead with 9:09 remaining, the Knights then went ice cold, not scoring over the next 5:58 and only sinking two more buckets—both treys--the rest of the first half.

Aside from giving up 10 offensive rebounds, Bellarmine played well defensively, holding the Rangers to just 26.5 percent shooting in the opening period and held a 36-20 halftime lead.

After the break, the Knights answered several UW-Parkside runs as the Rangers got as close as eight in the second period. Bellarmine didn't put the game away until the last minute of the game as Garett Ross converted both ends of the 1-and-1, then got a defensive stop. At the end of the play, BU's Jeremy Kendle was fouled on the rebound and the Parkside bench was hit with two technical fouls.  Kendle made four of the six ensuing free throws to leave no doubt to the outcome and give the Knights an 87-71 lead.  Ross hit a trey with one second remaining on the shot clock to provide the final margin.

"It was a great win," said Bellarmine Coach Scott Davenport. "But we didn't play a complete basketball game. We did not play any defense at all the last 30 minutes.  I'm not mad," Davenport continued, "just disappointed.  It's February 2nd, and it's time to be making positive strides, not moving backwards."

The final statistics will look pretty standard to most Bellarmine fans in that the Knights shot well (63 percent from the floor) and placed all five Bellarmine starters in double figures.  Kendle, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, led the way with 20 points and posted a team-high six rebounds. Hobbs finished with eight assists on the night he eclipsed Brandy Monks' all-time assist record.

The Rangers' Leneal Harris erupted for 22 second half points after scoring just two in the first half to lead UWP with 24 on the night.  Wisconsin-Parkside also won the battle of the backboards, corralling 15 offensive caroms to outrebound the Knights 34-31.

The win, Bellarmine's 14th in a row, pushed the Knights' overall record to 19-1 with an 11-1 GLVC record.  The Rangers fall to 8-12, 1-11 GLVC.

Bellarmine continues its road trip with a Saturday night game in Romeoville, Ill., where they will face Lewis in a game scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. (CST) tip.
