Charlie Ruter, who for decades played a gigantic role within the Louisville sports scene, died Saturday night at age 91. Ruter, a member of the Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame, was a vital part of track and field both as a coach and as an official in the Louisville area. His involvement with the Mason Dixon track and field games was crucial in the success of that longtime event. In 1984 , Ruter was an official for track and field at the 1984 Summer Olympics.
For decades, he sat at the Freedom Hall scorer's table as official scorer for both the Louisville Cardinals and Kentucky Colonels basketball teams. Ruter also spent over 30 years as a coach and teacher with the Jefferson County schools system.
