NEW ALBANY, IN (WAVE)- The day after a New Albany couple escaped their burning home with just the clothes on their backs, their community continues to come together, offering help.  Sunday, the sorrow still showed on David Burgin's face as he looked at the charred remains of the house he and his wife called home since 2000. His wife, Connie, was still stunned.

"I'm still in shock. It hits me from time to time," Connie said.

The smell of burned wood, bricks and memories were thick in the air, Sunday. Connie and her family picked through the charred rubble and looked for whatever could be salvaged.

"I did find some of my pictures that I was worried about I thought I'd lost," Connie said.

Saturday, a large fire swept through their home. The Burgins escaped, thanks to smoke detectors. The very next day their community, even perfect strangers, were offering help.

"The neighborhood has been really great. They have come to let us use their facilities and I have one lady, she's specially baked some cookies for us," Connie said.  "I do want to thank everybody."

The Burgins said this tragedy has given them a new perspective.

"Yeah, we might have a different outlook when you lose everything," said Connie. "I know our hearts will be poured out to other people when they go through this."

Yet through it all, Connie still had a smile on her face.

"Well, it's better to smile than to cry," she said. "But, we're trying to have a positive attitude. We've been through hard times before. We'll get through it."

Connie said she and her husband will rebuild and they will stay in their neighborhood.
