Body in cave identified, cause of death released

LOUISVILE, KY (WAVE) – A positive identification has been made of a body found inside a southern Indiana Sunday as a Georgetown, IN man missing for four months.

In a statement, Crawford County Coroner Chris Brown said the remains are those of 25-year-old Kevin Eve. Brown said an autopsy determined that Eve died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Eve was last seen alive on October 1, 2011 when he went caving in the Harrison/Crawford State Forest. His car was found three days later abandoned near the forest.

Eve's body was found Sunday by a group that had been exploring the Breathing Hole cave, which has a 154 foot drop at the entrance. Authorities say evidence found near the body matched items purchased by Eve the day he went missing.

"Evidence suggests that Kevin Eve's trip to that cave was a planned effort to end his own life," said Indiana Conservation Officer Corporal Terry Allen. "There were no signs of a struggle or entrapment at the scene."

After his disappearance an extensive search was launched for Eve. Cave rescue teams searched many of the caves in the forest while volunteers mounted a search of the surrounding areas.
