LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Firefighters are trying to determine the cause of a fire that damaged a group home for troubled youth Wednesday morning.
Crews were called to the group home at 8300 Westport Road at 6:44 a.m. According to Worthington firefighters, the fire started in a closet of a bedroom on the second floor. Crews were able to contain the fire to that one room.
Seven teens and two staff members were in the two-story building at the time. All got out safely after calling 911. Investigators say they waited in an outbuilding until firefighters arrived.
Teens and staff members will stay at a different facility as inspectors make sure the building is safe for them to move back in.
The group home, a transitional facility for troubled teens that have been released from juvenile corrections, is located near Westport Middle School. Although emergency equipment was blocking some lanes of Westport Road, bus service to the school was not interrupted.
