Boil advisory continues in Sellersburg, business make adjustments

Posted: Updated:

SELLERSBURG, IN (WAVE) - Don't drink the water. That word of caution from Sellersburg officials after a water main break. The entire town is under a boil advisory until Tuesday. And as WAVE 3 discovered, that's posing challenges for small businesses this weekend.

A nearly four-day boil advisory has Chef Mike Manning cooking more just hash browns and eggs on the on the range at Cricket's Café. "It's definitely an inconvenience," Manning said. "It's taken some adjustments. We unplugged all the water lines to any coffee or tea maker."

They've brought in their own ice, water is boiling in pots on the stove and fountain drinks are replaced with cans.

"You get used to having water just coming right out of the tap. We don't realize just how fortunate we are until something like this comes up," Manning said.

WAVE 3 went to the source - where a construction crew working on a development punctured a line. The location is at Hwy 60 and S. Indiana, just off the I-65 Exit 7 in Sellersburg.

"The company realizes the inconvenience for our residents, especially our businesses on the weekend," Public Works Director Ken Alexander said.

A contractor punctured a 12-inch water main line while digging near the intersection. "Its unfortunate. It's due to the locations we've experienced with lines that were installed in the 1970's," Alexander said.

The line has already been replaced and service is restored. Because of bacterial concerns, they're asking everyone to boil their water until tests prove it's safe to drink.

For now, they're asking for patience and apologizing.

"It just doesn't meet our core principles which is clean, safe water and reliable service," Alexander said.

Regulars who relied on Crickets Cafe being open for their morning coffee were welcomed as usual - as the café coped with the boil burden.
