GLVC Basketball Teams Tabbed in First NCAA D-II Regional Rankings

INDIANAPOLIS
– Eleven Great Lakes Valley Conference men's and women's basketball teams are among the 20 teams selected to the first NCAA Division II regional rankings, which was released Wednesday by the NCAA Midwest Regional Advisory Committees.  The top eight teams in each of the country's eight regions will make the NCAA Tournament.

On the men's side, Bellarmine (20-1 overall, 20-1 in-region) and Kentucky Wesleyan (15-4, 14-4) own the top two spots in the Midwest Region, followed by No. 4 Southern Indiana (15-4, 14-4), No. 5 Northern Kentucky (17-4, 17-4), No. 6 Indianapolis (13-7, 11-7), and No. 8 Lewis (10-9, 10-9).

Six men's squads advanced to the NCAA Regional last year, including Drury, Indianapolis, Kentucky Wesleyan, Northern Kentucky, Southern Indiana, and Bellarmine.  The Knights earned the Midwest Regional Championship and advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight where it captured its first national championship in program history.

Half of the women's regional rankings are made up of GLVC teams, led by No. 2 Wisconsin-Parkside (16-4, 15-3).  Quincy (15-6, 13-5), Drury (17-5, 16-4), and Northern Kentucky (16-5, 15-4) are slotted No. 3 through No. 5, respectively, while Indianapolis (15-7, 15-7) rounds out the conference contingent at No. 7.

Last year Drury, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lewis, Missouri S&T, Quincy, and Wisconsin-Parkside each earned a spot in the Midwest Regional and traveled to Michigan Tech, where the Rangers eventually fell to the third-ranked and top-seeded host in the regional final.

Indianapolis and Northern Kentucky join Ferris State as the only universities in the region to have both men's and women's programs regionally ranked.

The NCAA will announce the 64-team field (eight per region) on March 4 beginning with the women's bracket at 10 p.m. on NCAA.com, followed by the men's bracket at 10:30 p.m. The eight regionals will be held March 10, 11 and 13 at campus sites.
