LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A new merger could be in the works for University Hospital.
UofL President James Ramsey said the hospital must merge in some capacity to insure investments at the hospital and school continue. Ramsey said a proposal will be made public soon, asking for an outside partner.
The governor previously denied the proposed merger of the hospital with Jewish and Saint Mary's and Saint Joseph's Health Systems.
Ramsey said this request will be different. It will not be a full asset merger, requiring a lease take-over and therefore he said it would not involve the control issues that caused concern for the governor and many in the community.
James Ramsey said, "We've been through 12 budget cuts in 12 years. We do not have the resources. Other financial experts have told us we don't have the borrowing capacity so we need somebody who will partner with us. In some form. To invest in planned equipment and to invest in clinical programs and faculty and the University of Louisville."
Jewish and Saint Mary's moved forward with the merger without University and Ramsey said that new partnership is expressing interest in the hospital's new proposal. He also mentioned talks with Baptist Hospital East but said once opened it will be a public bid.
