It's how high school basketball should be. The players shooting, the cheerleaders cheering, and the fans screaming. It's district playoffs at Henderson County High School.
Hunter Comer is a forward for the Colonels. He was in the stands Tuesday night, watching Union County take on Webster County and sizing up what will be his competition.
"Just kind of scouting and seeing who we're going to play," said Comer. "I come back Monday to play in the regional tournament."
When he and his fellow teammates take the court to play in that tournament, he says, they're in it to win it. He says they're focused, even though the hardwood at Henderson County High School has seen some hard times.
On Sunday, one of the team's players, Gavont Baker was arrested, accused of being involved in a scandal that rocked the team. Police say that incident took place in the school's locker room after practice.
They say some of the players began horsing around after taking a shower. But, police say that horseplay turned criminal when one of the students recorded video on a cell phone that showed a player naked.
Police say that video of the under-age player was sent by cell phone to several students.
Students tell 14 News, Baker was kicked off the team and some of the other players involved were punished.
Comer says the team immediately did what a team needs to do in difficult times and pulled together.
"We've come together more as a team actually. I think we're a better team since then. I just think we've got to play and put that stuff behind us," said Comer.
The team has a few more hoops to get through first.
Police say there are five suspects in this case. But, Baker is the only one who is 18. Authorities are not saying if the others will face charges. Baker is expected to appear in court in March.
