U-Haul driver charged with murder after hitting father and son

CANEYVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A son was killed and his father is clinging to life after they were hit by truck while they were filling up a car with gas on the side of a road.

It happened around 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Grayson County, and the driver is facing some serious charges.

"It's unbelievable, it is one of those things, and I really feel for the family," said longtime neighbor Martha Payton.

She can't begin to imagine what the Mudd family is going through. Their lives were turned upside down when police say Ricky Mudd and his 18-year-old son Joshua Mudd went to fill up their mother's car with gas. It ran out the other day and was stranded along Western Kentucky Parkway. As they were filling it up, that's when police say a U-Haul veered into the emergency lane, striking both of them.

"It's terrible, terrible because they said it looked like it just came right at him, but you just hate to hear of anything like that," said Payton.

Behind the wheel was 48-year-old Steven Holland of Dyersburg, TN. Kentucky State Police say he was under the influence of drugs. Three other people were inside the U-Haul but were not hurt.

Holland is now charged with murder, assault, driving under the influence and reckless driving.
While neighbors try to come to terms with what happened, it's just another reminder of how fragile life is. "You just don't ever know when you get out, you just don't ever know," said Payton.

Ricky Mudd remained in critical condition at University Hospital in Louisville. Holland is behind bars in the Grayson County Jail.
