Bill to protect against police brutality under debate

INDIANAPOLIS (WAVE) – A bill under debate in the Indiana Legislature could give citizens greater protection against police brutality.

The law states citizens would be covered under the state's existing self defense law if they believe force is necessary to protect themselves from unlawful police.

State representatives voted 74 to 24 in favor of the law Thursday in Indianapolis.

The bill is in response to an Indiana Supreme Court ruling that residents could not resist police during an illegal entry.

The House and Senate must agree on a final version.
