Bill to regulate stages and other temporary structures passes Senate

INDIANAPOLIS (WAVE) – Temporary stages, like the one that collapsed at the Indiana State Fair, could be getting a safety overhaul.

A bill that would give the State Fire Prevention and Building Safety Commission the power to regulate stages and other temporary structures passed the Senate Thursday.

The legislation would require the commission to inspect the temporary structures for safety before events.

Seven people died and 58 were injured when high winds took down the stage at the fair in August 2011.

Republicans who opposed the bill called it a "knee-jerk" response to the collapse.
