Zenyatta becomes a mom, gives birth to colt

VERSAILLES, KY (WAVE) - Former racing sensation Zenyatta, the Horse of the Year who won 19 of 20 races during her stellar career, has given birth for the first time.

A post on Zenyatta.com says the mare had a dark bay colt at 10:10 p.m. on Thursday at Lane's End Farm in Versailles, KY. The colt weighed 130 pounds, has a white star on his forehead and some white in his feet, the website says.

According to the post, written in Zenyatta's words, "I'm doing great. MY BABY is doing great..."

2006 Preakness winner Bernardini is the colt's sire.

Zenyatta retired in November 2010 after losing to Blame in the Breeders' Cup Classic, her only loss. The superstar mare, who became a pop culture sensation while racing mostly in Southern California, was owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith.
