Cursive could become mandatory

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) – A new bill in Kentucky would require more cursive writing in schools.

Representative Ben Waide said House Bill 489 would require students to be proficient with the writing style by fifth grade.

He said too many children don't know how to read or write cursive writing, "I think it should be evaluated but again if we don't test it then we don't teach it, if you don't measure it, you don't manage it so I think we leave our kids behind if we don't teach them cursive writing."

The bill will go to the education committee. If passed it could take effect in 2013.
