LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Basketball is booming in our region.
The Lady Crimsons of DuPont Manual High School just won their first ever Kentucky basketball championship with a win over Marion County Saturday that aired live on WAVE 3.2 – This TV, capping a six year run where they've been ranked in the top five schools in Kentucky.
There is a good chance a local team will win the Kentucky boys high school championship this Saturday night as well as several are playing this week in the Sweet Sixteen.
The Bellarmine Knights are shooting for their second straight NCAA Division II championship, something no school has achieved in nearly 50 years.
Four area teams enter the NCAA tournament ranked in the top 17 in the country in this week's AP poll – top ranked Kentucky, 12th ranked Murray State, 16th ranked Indiana and 17th ranked Louisville.
Western Kentucky, the 5th area team in the NCAA tournament, comes in as Sun Belt Conference tournament champions. Louisville enters as the Big East tournament champions for the second time in the past three years in a league that has had more entries to the NCAA tournament the past three years than any other league.
The city of Louisville is already a big winner as it hosts the South Regional Thursday and Sunday, exposing thousands of people throughout the country to what we already know – the KFC Yum! Center is a terrific tournament venue and one that should be asked to host a sweet sixteen regional in the future.
This area has long been a hoops hotbed, but this year could be the finest ever, capped by an NCAA tournament champion.
We applaud all the area high school and college athletes who have competed so well to make this season most memorable.
