ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – One horse was killed, another was injured and the two men who were riding them were cited for driving under the influence after a car crashed into them on a busy Hardin County Road on Saturday.
Investigators say Brandon Whitaker, 20, and Dennis Polinsky, 28, both of Hardin County, were riding their horses on St. John Road around 8:30 Saturday night. An oncoming vehicle hit both horses, causing minor injuries to the riders, a spokesperson for Kentucky State Police told WAVE 3. The men were taken to Hardin Memorial Hospital for treatment.
One of the horses was killed at the scene. The other was taken to a nearby farm where a veterinarian was called to care for the animal. That horse is expected to recover.
Police said both suspects were cited for DUI. Polinsky told WAVE 3 he did not have anything to drink on Saturday which he said a breathalyzer test indicated.
It was discovered that Polinsky was wanted on an outstanding warrant from another county, so he was taken to the Hardin County Detention Center and released a short time later. Polinsky said the warrant was for an unpaid fine from last summer.
Whitaker was expected to appear in court for his DUI citation at a later date.
The driver of the car that hit the horses, Roger Obenson, will not be charged.
