PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A man who was arrested in a April 2012 burglary has been found guilty of second-degree murder and trespassing.

Phoenix police said Marcos Mendoza, 26, shot and killed Manuel Chavarria in the parking lot of a convenience mart in the 1900 block of East Roosevelt Street on April 1, 2012.

Mendoza faces up to 27 years in prison.

A woman called police to report a burglary in progress at her home at 4925 W. Osborn Rd. She then escaped unharmed, according to Sgt. Trent Crump of the Phoenix Police Department.

The police dog found the suspect hiding under a bed in the residence, Crump said, and officers were able to capture the man.

Helicopter news footage showed Mendoza visibly limping after being brought outside the home and arrested.

Chavarria was found at a Kwik Mart and rushed to the hospital, where he later died. An autopsy revealed he had been shot five times.

Detectives said Mendoza and Chavarria had been arguing in the parking lot just before shots rang out. Chavarria had accused Mendoza of burning his girlfriend twice, according to court paperwork.  As Chavarria walked back to his vehicle, he was shot by Mendoza, a probable cause statement said.

Three passengers in Mendoza's vehicle bailed out. One of them provided CPR to the victim until police arrived.  The two other passengers fled on foot.

The abandoned vehicle was later found by police several blocks from the scene.

Mendoza is scheduled to be sentenced on July 19.
