LST docked in Louisville in 1944 en route to Pacific from Pittsburgh where it was built. At the time, his mother lived 5 blocks from river, but the captain would not let anyone off. Subsequently, the captain went off the ship and got drunk and arrested. My grandfather, since he was from Louisville, had to go the jail and get him out.
