Officer helps to deliver baby at gas station

CLAY COUNTY, IN (WAVE)An Indiana State Excise police officer is being credited with helping to deliver a baby at a gas station.

Lt. Christopher Bard was driving home at the end of his shift Thursday morning when he saw two women on the ground at the gas station.

As it turned out the women were mother and daughter and the mother, a trained EMT, was delivering her daughter's baby.

Officials said Lt. Bard helped deliver the baby. He cut one of the mother's shoelaces with his knife, then held the baby girl in a blanket while the woman's mother cut the umbilical cord and tied off the baby's end with the shoelace.

Lt. Bard then escorted the women and the newborn baby to a nearby hospital. The mother and her baby are said to be doing well.
