ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - The babysitter accused of killing the 2 year old she was supposed to be watching made her first court appearance since a grand jury indicted her on murder charges.

28-year-old Ashley Chapman pled not guilty in a Hardin County courtroom to charges of murder and being a persistent felony offender. With the words Daviess County inmate written on her back the woman who was watching 2-year-old Layla Johnson in Vine Grove back in January when the toddler died had her attorney speak on her behalf.

Police say Chapman shook and hit Johnson so hard she was knocked unconscious. Johnson died later at Kosair Children's hospital in Louisville. The toddler's family was in the courtroom for the hearing but had nothing to say after the hearing.

Chapman has been held in Daviess County jail because she has a probation violation out of that area. She's due back in court here in August.
