LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Kentucky Fried Chicken has been ordered to pay more than $8 million in damages to the family of an Australian girl severely injured by salmonella poisoning.

Monika Samaan was hospitalized with the poisoning in 2005 after eating a twister wrap at a KFC near Sydney.

Monika spent six months in a coma and was left in a wheelchair and unable to speak.

The family was awarded $8.3 million in damages Friday.

Their attorney called the decision a relief because Monika's illness had exhausted the family's limited resources.

The family's attorney George Vlahakis said, "It was a tremendous battle, but at this stage we can't make any further comment, thank you."

A spokesperson for KFC, owned by Yum! Brands, said the company felt deeply for the Samaan family but would appeal the decision.
