RADCLIFF, KY (WAVE) - There are still many questions after a 13-month-old is accidentally shot and killed by her 3-year-old brother in Radcliff. The coroner has released the name of the little girl, Bella San Martin. Daughter of Angelica and Christopher San Martin.
People in Hardin County are still stunned by this devastating situation.
"It was shocking," said neighbor Kathy Morrison. "We were talking about it again this morning how could something like that happen?'
For residents on Keith Ct, what happened Sunday afternoon still weighs heavily on their hearts and minds.
"A 3-year-old with a gun, the parents..I can't even imagine how they would feel," said Morrison. "Their baby is dead."
Around 3:30 Sunday afternoon Radcliff police received a call of an accidental shooting. Police say 13-month-old Bella San Martin was fatally shot by her 3-year-old brother. Police say it was a tragic accident. The parents were home at the time.
"I guess once the ambulance got here they rushed upstairs and I seen them grab the little girl and bring her outside and she was lifeless," said Spc. Marquis Lawrence.
Lawrence lives across the street and says he is in the same army unit at Ft. Knox as Bella's father. They had recently returned home from Afghanistan. He says he often would see the family playing together outside.
"It's sad, really sad," said Spc. Lawrence. "I know the little boy he's only 3-years-old and had no idea what he was doing and now he has to live with that for the rest of his life."
As the case remains under investigation, a lesson for everyone here.
"If you have a loaded gun in your house lock it up," said Morrison. "I pray for the family I do, because something like this is going to take a long time to heal and my heart goes out to them."
Police are still investigating if any charges will be filed against the parents in this case. Police say Bella's family will be having funeral services in California where they are from.
The Radcliff Police department says they stress gun safety and even give out free gun safety locks.
