(Louisville, Ky., May 9th, 2004, 6:10 p.m.) --Metro Police are investigating a shooting outside a popular downtown Louisville nightclub early Sunday morning. Investigators say one man shot four young people before fleeing. One of the victims is in critical condition. WAVE 3's Dina Kaplan has the latest.

Closing time at O'Malley's meant a cascade of gunfire. Shortly before 4 o'clock Sunday morning, a fight broke out. Witnesses told police the fight continued outside.

"At which time a man produced a handgun, firing several times and struck several people before fleeing on foot," said Metro Police spokesperson Alicia Smiley.

Three men in their 20s were struck as well as a young woman who may not survive.

"She is in critical condition right now ... sustaining some very very serious injuries." said Smiley.

Under a dark sky, the shooter escaped.

"The only description given was that he is a black man. We don't have a description of clothing or age," said Smiley.

According to police, that man was involved in the original fight.

"Police believe he may have been part of the altercation that began inside.
but they don't know if the victims were targeted.

Sunday afternoon, the crime tape is in the trash ... but the investigation continues. That includes plans to charge the shooter.

"Should the woman die, of course murder would be the charge, " said Smiley. "If not, I'm sure there will be assault charges, wanton endangerment, we'll see what else,"

The three men struck do not have life threatening injuries. Metro Police have made past arrests at O'Malley's for alcohol intoxication and disorderly conduct. They say that is not unusual for any nightspot in Louisville.
