LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A report of shots fired near Shawnee High School turned into a SWAT situation Friday afternoon at a house at 41st and Larkwood Avenue in Louisville's west end.
A MetroSafe dispatcher said police chased two young men who were shooting at each other near the school around 12:40 p.m.
Police said they arrested a 15-year-old suspect. The second suspect barricaded himself inside a house, and a SWAT team was called to the scene. A daycare center is located across the street.
Nearby Shawnee High School at 4018 West Market Street remained at a heightened security level Friday afternoon.
Jefferson County Public Schools officials were notified at 12:44 p.m. JCPS spokesperson Lauren Roberts said Shawnee High School's heightened security level remained at level 3 immediately following the incident.
Roberts said all JCPS schools were placed on the heightened security level on Friday as a precaution and to make staff, students and parents feel safe following shootings in Louisville's west end on Thursday that left three people dead and three others injured. Roberts said it has been a smooth and quiet day at the schools.
According to JCPS officials, level 3 generally means exterior access is controlled and under staff supervision. Outdoor activities are limited.
