LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Thieves either didn't know or didn't care that a camera captured video of them stealing rings from a jewelry store near Churchill Downs.

John Tan, owner of Little John's Derby Jewelry at 3029 South 4th Street, said he was distracted on the phone for a few seconds on May 16 when a couple working as a team snatched several rings.

The video appears to show a woman trying to hide the man behind her as he reaches into an unlocked display cabinet, grabs some diamond rings and stuffs them down his shirt.

Tan said the rings are valued at $40,000. The police report lists the total at $18,000.

Tan is offering a $3,000 reward via his store's Facebook page to anyone who can help track down the thieves, but he said he doesn't expect to get the rings back.

"If you don't do something about it, and put people like that in jail, they'll keep on going. They'll get better at it," said Tan.

Anyone with information about the crime should call the Louisville Metro Police Department's anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD.
