LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - If you're heading out for a long holiday weekend it's not too late to save some cash. Search engine giant Google is advising travelers to use their smart devices to get big savings.
Daniel Sieberg is a technology expert with Google and says vacation searches are up 1000% over the last 30 days.
"In the Louisville area we've seen vacation ideas up about 41% for the past week, we've seen vacation packages up about 79% in the past week and gas prices as a search term up about 76%" Sieberg said.
Gas searches clearly indicate that gas prices can drive vacation plans. In addition to mapping out the best places to fuel along your trip Sieberg recommends using mobile maps to get the best routes too.
You can also use apps and searches to find deals once you're at your vacation destination.
"One of them you can try out is called Google Offers" Sieberg said, "it's available in 100 different metro areas and the idea is that you can go into your mobile device, see what's around you, see if there's a spa package that's available for 20% off, an amusement park that offering some type of deal for the kids."
While planning ahead is always a smart way to save money, don't miss out on more savings by making your smart technology work for you.
"You don't have to do it all in advance, you can be spontaneous and just have some fun with it. And along the way you're saving that money which can make any vacation that much more fun" Sieberg said.
