Alpacas take over the Fair and Expo Center

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Hundreds of alpacas are on display at the Kentucky Exposition Center.

The Alpaca Owners and Breeders Association kicked off their show Friday night with an alpaca costume contest.

Breeders from across the United States will be at the fairgrounds all Memorial Day weekend showing off their animals.

Stuart Ray has an alpaca farm in Louisville and said it has been a great job for him for a decade, "It's been an outstanding business. The animals have retained value and we breed for their quality and their fleece characteristics."

The fleece from alpacas is used to make material for a number of different products some said its just as soft and warm as cashmere.

The alpaca show kicks off every morning at 8 a.m. with free admission.
