LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - On this annual holiday, when so many enjoy a day off from work, head to a pool, or enjoy a cookout, it's important to remember what Memorial Day is really all about.
Despite the heat, Cave Hill and Zachary Taylor National Cemetery were packed with people where they honored our brave men and women who died for our country.
"We need to honor these folks," said veteran David "Chico" Martinez.
"We're a military family," said Mary Ann Bellflower. "My husband served in the air force and I have three children that are in now."
They wear their uniforms, badges, and pins to show their journey hasn't been easy.
"It's important that we come here and honor those people and remember what they have done and what they have done has allowed us to live the kind of life we live today," said Staff Sgt. Randall Pike.
"They can do the BBQ and cookouts and that is fine but, don't forget these folks, and what it means to us," said Martinez.
Congressman John Yarmuth delivered the memorial address at Zachary Taylor National Cemetery.
