LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The demolition of the Sheppard Square housing project in downtown Louisville began on Friday.
A $20 million Hope VI grant is paying for the World War II-era buildings to be torn down, making way for a mixed-income community with shops, restaurants and replacement housing.
The Louisville Metro Housing Authority said relocated Sheppard Square residents will have the first opportunity to move into new units set aside for low-income families.
Sheppard Square is located between Finzer, Lampton, Preston and Clay Streets.
Louisville firefighters and Jefferson County sheriff deputies held training exercises in the empty buildings on Thursday.
