PADUCAH, KY (WAVE) – A lengthy investigation lead to a physician charged with drug trafficking in exchange for personal favors.

Kentucky State Police began investigating 43-year-old Dr. Troy Nelson in January after hearing he was allegedly prescribing narcotics to people who were not his patients.

The police eventually involved the United State Drug Enforcement Administration which uncovered numerous instances of prescriptions being written to people in return for personal favors.

Friday Nelson was charged with seven counts of felony drug trafficking and four counts of misdemeanor drug trafficking.

He is being booked in the McCraken County Jail.
