LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police say that a man who ran from a traffic stop held three people inside their apartment.

An arrest report states that after officers pulled over Shermaine A. Pendleton's motorcycle in the 7400 block of National Turnpike around 4:45 p.m. Tuesday, he fled from police on foot.

Police say Pendleton, 36, then forced open the back door of an apartment in the 7400 block of Garrison Road, went inside and told the woman who lived there not to open the door for police. He held the woman and her two children, ages 10 and a newborn less than one month old, in back bedroom.

The report states the woman, who was recovering from the recent birth, tried to call 911 twice, but hung up because she felt she was endangering her family. Emergency operators tried to call the number back four times, but the woman was prevented from answering the phone by Pendleton.

Pendleton finally opened the door and surrendered to police, but the woman said before surrendering he flushed items that appeared to be drug-related down the toilet. She also said Pendleton used her perfume to try and cover his scent from police dogs.

Pendleton has been charged with burglary, unlawful imprisonment, fleeing or evading police and tampering with physical evidence. He is also facing several traffic-related charges because his license was suspended and the motorcycle did not have a current registration or insurance.
