Outrage over sentence causes book ban

ERIE, IL (WAVE) – A book has been banned in a cities school district because of one sentence containing eight words.

The Illinois School District has banned the children's book because of controversy that sparked over the sentence, "Some families have two moms or two dads."

The district said the book has initially been used with lesson plans from the Gay Lesbian Straight education Network to teach elementary students diversity and tolerance.

After words spread about the book in the 1,600 person town parents were outraged.

Erie School District Superintendent Brad Cox said, "At our April board meeting, we had between 75 to 100 people show up which is quite a few and the vast majority who spoke at that board meeting spoke in opposition of the materials."

With the majority of people in the town against the book the district said it is looking for a new learning tool to replace the book.

The author of the book said it has been published for 10 years and this is the first time a controversy has occurred.
