LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A eight-month-old baby was found dead in a car outside his parents' home in eastern Jefferson County early Tuesday evening on a day when temperatures soared to 90 degrees.

Police said the incident happened in the 6400 block of Glenwood Road in the Northfield area.

"It's very tragic," said Louisville Metro Police Department spokesperson Dwight Mitchell. Police have released few details about the puzzling situation that unfolded in the subdivision around 6 p.m. Monday.

The coroner's office pronounced the infant dead at the scene. It was unclear why the baby was left in the car or how long he was there.

"We should get more definitive information on what happened, but again, it's still very early in the investigation," Mitchell said.

The parents were driven to LMPD headquarters in separate cars for questioning. It was not clear whether they would face charges.

"We want to be as thorough as we can, as we are on any investigation that we do," Mitchell said. "And certainly at this point, it's a very tragic time and a very tragic time for that family, for the parents and everybody involved, and I'm sure for the neighbors, as well."

Neighbors said the couple is new the subdivision and that the boy was their only child.
