JESSAMINE COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – The paternal grandmother of Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes, a woman who became a public figure in her own right during Grimes' 2011 campaign, has died.

Thelma Lundergan McHugh and Grimes' maternal grandmother, Elsie Case, starred in a series of popular, humorous political ads on behalf of their granddaughter.

McHugh, 92, died Thursday at her home in Jessamine County surrounded by her family and other loved ones.

"My grandmother instilled in me the confidence that I could accomplish anything I put my mind to and taught me by example the importance of being involved in my community, said Grimes. "I hope to honor her memory by continuing her legacy of service and hard work."

McHugh worked in the Mason County Sheriff's Office for more than twenty years.

Grimes' office said in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to the Children's Department of the Jessamine County Public Library, St. Patrick's School in Maysville, KY or Hospice of the Bluegrass.
