Man killed by police in Breathitt County shootout; 3 officers among 5 wounded

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A shooting in rural Breathitt County has left one man dead and five people hurt, including three police officers.

The incident occurred around Sunday night in the Canoe community after police were sent to a house when a driver called 911 and said someone was shooting at their car while they were driving on Route 30 West.

In a press release issued by Kentucky State Police, after troopers and Breathitt County deputies arrived and made contact with the alleged gunman the man began firing at the lawmen firing from his front porch forcing them to seek cover being their patrol cars. Police returned fire and later found the man wounded on his porch.

The gunman, identified as Danny Johnson, 59, of Houston, KY, was pronounced dead at a hospital.

KSP said Trooper Joey King was struck in the face with buckshot and the two deputies also received minor buckshot wounds. The couple in the car Johnson fired on also received minor wounds. None of the injuries are considered life threatening.
