HENRYVILLE, IN (WAVE) - St. Francis Xavier Church saved lives during the March 2 tornado in Henryville, and now it is getting a new lease on life.
The church lost its roof and suffered other damage while area residents huddled in the basement for shelter. The $250,000 roof was covered by insurance. Support beams needed repairs as well as the tower outside. The steeple and cross that stood strong through the twister will be fixed as well.
The church also purchased two nearby properties, where homes used to stand before being destroyed by the twister. A team of volunteers is turning a home into a recovery center where survivors from all three counties in the area can come for assistance.
Construction on the home and repairs to the church should be completed in a couple of weeks.
