LAUREL COUNTY, KY (WAVE) – A couple has been arrested after police said they traded their 1999 silver Dodge Dakota for a newborn child.

Sheriff John Root said police were tipped off that the newborn infant had been traded for the vehicle which was then sold for $800 and an undisclosed amount of methamphetamine.

Detectives were able to locate the vehicle in the Keavy area. The current owner said he had bought the car from Heather Kaminskey for $800 but no drugs were involved and that the infant was staying with Kaminskey's mother in Florida.

Further investigation led police to Jeremy and Jamiee Brown who had the now 6-month-old child. Police said their stories of how they came to have the child varied, but once the biological grandmother of the child was revealed they admitted the truth.

The grandmother stated Kaminskey was her daughter and that she had fled from Florida to Kentucky in January 2012. She fled while she was 9 months pregnant in an attempt to evade Florida Social Services, who had already removed her two other children.

The child was removed from the Brown's home. The Browns were arrested and charged with human trafficking, a class b felony carrying up to a 20 year sentence. The Browns have three biological children who were present at the home and have now been placed with relatives.

Warrants and extradition approval are currently being obtained for Kaminskey.
