I-65 scheduled to reopen

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Crews have been working hard to get the paving finished on the main line of the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 between the Watterson Expressway and Chestnut Street.

Saturday morning crews were delayed getting I-65 northbound paved along the Kennedy Bridge due to rain.

Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Spokeswoman Andrea Clifford said, "They were able to get half of the work done before rains caused them to have to postpone for awhile. They tried to stop for a little bit and they actually had a dryer truck that's used at Kentucky Speedway that dries up the road when they have races that are delayed. They tried that for a little bit and had some asphalt come back out and we got heavier rains so they postponed paving until 3 a.m. Sunday."

The delay forced crews to work faster to get the shoulders and some of the exit ramps paved in time for the Monday morning commute, which could mean additional lane closures in upcoming weeks.

"They were able to get all of the mainline paving done. We may be delayed some on getting the ramps and the shoulders finished paving over this weekend. We had anticipated that we would have gotten all of the work done but we did have to stop and take a delay due to the rain," Clifford said.

Some of the shoulder and ramp work could take place overnight Monday and Tuesday, but I-65 is still scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

Clifford said the upcoming weekend could cause more traffic headaches when bridge work moves to  the other side, "We're currently scheduled to do the same type of work next weekend on southbound I-65. We'll have the southbound lanes closed from downtown to the Watterson for paving of the final asphalt surface next weekend and we'll be doing those ramps and shoulders as well. We're hoping for good weather."
