LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Metro Police have charged the man found wounded inside a Pleasure Ridge Park home area Sunday morning with the deaths of the three people found inside. John Devine, 36, is facing three counts of murder and one count of burglary.
The victims have been identified as Devine's estranged girlfriend, Sadé Goldsmith, 26, and the two sons of the couple, John Devine, Junior, 6, and JonT Devine, 5.
Metro police were called to the 6100 block of Maravian Drive around 6 a.m. on July 15 after a panic alarm went off at the Goldsmith home. Officers found the back door had been broken in and the four people inside shot.
During a news conference to announce the charges against Devine, Lt. Barry Wilkerson, commander of the LMPD Homicide Unit, said Goldsmith had been shot in the front part of the home and the children were each shot while sleeping in the bed they shared upstairs. Wilkerson said Devine then turned the gun on himself trying to shoot himself fin the chest.
Police say the couple had ongoing domestic issues.
"It was a situation where the anger built up and it was one moment where all that occurred," said Wilkerson.
According to Wilkerson, Devine was cold and matter of fact when he confessed to the killings.
A day care worker fondly remembers caring for the two children.
"The boys were very loving and very smart. I could ask colors and numbers and they would rattle them off in no time," the worker said who wished to remain anonymous.
The worker says she, too, feared for the family.
"I knew something was going on. I did everything I knew. I told the mom and she said she was doing all she could to get them away. The boys said they saw daddy hit and he was mean," she said.
At last report, Devine was being treated for his wounds at University Hospital. When released, he will be booked into Louisville Metro Corrections.
Police say Devine is eligible for the death penalty.
The family hopes to finalize funeral arrangements Wednesday.
