LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) A family is in mourning after a man was shot to death right outside of his mother's home.
The family of Antwain Watkins, 27, said it is tough. Antwain Watkins' sister and niece said they have been up all night and they are leaning on the support of their family during this time.
Antwain Watkins' sister, Jennika Watkins, said her mother called her crying Saturday morning.
"Somebody had took the phone from her and told me that my brother was dead," Jennika Watkins said.
She came over to her mother's house on 39th street where her brother and been visiting just before his death.
"To see my brother laying out here like that...," she said as she lost the words to describe what she saw.
"She actually came out and seen some guy standing over him shooting," Jennika Watkins said. "But then he took off running."
Antwain Watkins died at the scene at 1:57 a.m. of multiple gunshot wounds. LMPD said the suspect is at University of Louisville Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
"They took a loved, a true loved one from us," Antwain Watkins' niece, Donmica Porter, said. Jennika Watkins said "To know you're not going to see him again, ain't no words to describe it."
Jennika Watkins said her brother was funny, silly and he loved kids. He had two sons of his own. "He loved singing. Not saying he could sing (laughter)," Jennika Watkins said as she and Porter smiled and laughed for the first time while talking to WAVE 3. "But he did, he loved singing."
"I don't like what happened. But, I'm trusting in God and it's in the Lord's hands. So, I've got to forgive," Jennika Watkins said. "I just hope that people would take this as a wake-up call. It's just pointless. My little brother did not have to die."
In this tough time, Jennika Watkins is leaning on family and faith. Porter agreed. "I can sit and think all of these things, but it's not going to bring Antwain Watkins back. It's not going to change the situation," said Jennika Watkins. "I'm literally leaving it in the Lord's hands." Police are not releasing the name of that suspect because charges have not been filed. Murder charges could be pending.
Antwain Watkins' wake will be Tuesday from 4-9 p.m. at W.P. Porter's Mortuary at 2611 Virginia Avenue in Louisville. His funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m.
