(SIMPSONVILLE, KY.) The game is still five weeks away, and the first practice is still about a week away, but Thursday afternoon's Governor's Cup Luncheon signifies the start of the football season for the Cards and the Cats.
It was a packed house in the Cardinal Club for the annual luncheon and press conference. The coaching staffs for the respective teams met with the media before heading to the golf course for a little fun. UK Head Coach, Joker Phillips says this event marks the end of summer vacation for him and his staff. "My last day playing golf," said Phillips. "I put my clubs in the back of my pickup, hoping somebody steals them. So, anybody out there who needs some clubs, have at it they're yours."
For the first time since Strong and Phillips took over the state's two most prominent programs three years ago, U of L will go into the game favored to beat the Cats. With analyst across the country picking the Cards to win the Big East and go to the Orange Bowl, Strong is trying to keep his team level headed, but has an appreciation for how far his team has come in a short time. "Two years ago, no one ever thought we'd win a football game. Someone told me, ' coach if you just get me one or two wins, we'll be happy', and I just never heard that before. I said ' you know, we're never going to try to just get you one or two wins, we're going to go try win as many as we possibly can," said the coach.
The Cards and Cats meet on the gridiron on September 2nd.
