LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The chemical reaction that brought emergency crews to a Rubbertown plant Wednesday morning has been stabilized.

According to MetroSafe, the call was received around 8:15 a.m. from Zeon Chemicals at 4100 Bells Lane. A "Code Red" was issued around 8:30 a.m. to residents by text message, telephone and e-mail to inform them for the emergency response to the plant.

Workers in the affected building were evacuated and other employees moved back from the building as fire crews and plant personnel worked to access the situation.

Vince Luney, a MetroSafe supervisor, said 11 gallons of a product that was a mix of an acid and peroxide were involved. Luney said the peroxide was the problem and should not have been mixed with the acid.

Just before 11 a.m. Luney said another alert was being sent to residents to tell them the chemicals are contained and there would be no need for action by Rubbertown residents.

MetroSafe said two workers have been taken to a hospital for treatment of heat-related illness.

Just before noon, WAVE 3's Katherine Kington reported that firefighters were beginning to leave the scene and work at the plant will resume.

According to its website, Zeon Chemicals is a leading developer and supplier of polymers for the automotive industry.
