LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A man has died after being stabbed Sunday afternoon in the 200 block of West Kenton Street, near the intersection of Kenton and 3rd Streets.
Police didn't have to look far for a suspect. Less than a block away, officers arrested 65-year-old Robert Mathews and charged him with murder.
"They're buddies, so I don't know what really caused this situation," said neighbor Kim Curry.
Stunned friends and neighbors watched the two crime scenes Sunday afternoon.
"Approximately an hour or so after the victim was transported to University Hospital, he was pronounced deceased," LMPD Spokesperson Alicia Smiley said.
Officers say the man was discovered on a front porch of a home along Kenton.
Curry knew both men.
"They sit out here and drink all the time and do what they do and so I don't know what caused the ruckus," she said.
Sunday's stabbing isn't the first time tragedy has struck that area. It was just a couple of weeks ago when lightening struck a home along 3rd Street catching it on fire, killing two people inside.
A family member who lived there says she's still dealing with that loss while also dealing with Sunday's scene just down the street.
"It's hard to bounce back from it. Someday's I'm good. A couple of days ago I was broken; it just comes and it goes. It's hard. It's hard, especially losing my baby and my dad; it's hard," Lillie Favez said.
Her father and 19 year-old daughter died in the fire, destroying their home of five years.
"I just try to keep busy, but night comes and lately we've been having the fire and the lightening and the rain and it does not help me at all. I'm just a basket case," Favez said.
Now neighbors are on edge once again, as one man dies in the neighborhood and another is charged with his murder.
"I don't know what would have caused him to want to kill the man; I don't know, it couldn't have been that deep, but we'll all see what comes out in the wash," Curry said.
Police haven't released the name of the victim, other than to say that he is a white male in his 40's.
