LMPD cruiser crashes into house

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A Louisville Metro police officer has been rushed to University Hospital after a LMPD car struck a house in the Highview neighborhood.

The accident happened at 1:05 p.m. in the 6300 block of Outer Loop just west of Smyrna Road. Video from Air 3 shows the front of the LMPD police cruiser inside the front door area of the home.

From the scene, WAVE 3's Maira Ansari reports that a family of five was inside the home at the time of the crash. The family was being cared for by neighbors. It appears none of them were injured.

A person who witnessed the accident told Maira the police car had its lights and siren when it was cut off in traffic. The witness said the police car then went through the yard and hit the house. According to the witness, the family crawled out a window of the home.

Sgt. Barry Denton with the LMPD Traffic Unit said Outer Loop has been shut down between Smyrna Road and Zenith while police investigate the accident. The closure is expected to last into the afternoon rush hour.
