VERSAILLES, Ky. (AP) - Bodemeister, the second-place finisher in this year's Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, has been retired to stud after an injury to his left shoulder was found.
WinStar Farm announced the decision Tuesday and said the colt is expected to fully recovery, though not soon enough for this fall's Breeders' Cup.
Trainer Bob Baffert says in a statement from WinStar that Bodemeister, who is named for Baffert's son Bode, likely was hurt recently during training at Del Mar Racetrack. Baffert says the horse stumbled significantly and threw his exercise rider to the ground.
Bodemeister won the Arkansas Derby in April by 9½ lengths and retires with earnings of $1,304,800 for owners Zayat Stables LLC and Mike and Tiffany Moreno.
