RAMSEY, IN (WAVE) - Students and staff returned to North Harrison High School Wednesday, dealing with the loss of a popular senior.

David Austin, 17, passed Tuesday when a car driven by a friend veered off the road after school, throwing Austin from the car.

Everyone from freshmen to fellow seniors felt the loss.

"Everybody was kind of mopey and sobbing. A lot of people were sad about it," said Morgan Lindsay, North Harrison High School Freshman.

"It was really quiet. It was weird seeing his locker there and him not being there," said Rachel Watts, North Harrison High School Senior.

The entire student body of nearly 700 had to deal with the loss of one of their own, left with only memories of David.

"He was a good kid. He could always make you laugh no matter what. He could always put a smile on your face," said Ashlee Jones, North Harrison High School Senior.

"He was really nice. He was friends with everyone. He always had something to say," said Rachel Watts, North Harrison High School Senior.

"He just always made me smile and made me laugh," said Josh Chinn, North Harrison High School Junior.

Chinn returned Wednesday to the same 6th period class he had with David.

"It was kind of hard. Everybody started to cry, but it's just something we had to get over," Chinn said.

Just a few days into the school year, these students are dealing with a huge loss; as is David Austin's sister, a junior at North Harrison.

"She was at school today, which was different to see her there. She seemed kind of the same, but seemed kind of sad," said Shelby Lindsay, North Harrison High School Junior.

Senior Ethan Rauchmiller is the driver of the car David was riding in at the time of the crash.

Rauchmiller is still recovering at University Hospital.

"I know people were going to go see him after school," said Shelby Lindsay, North Harrison High School Junior.

He's expected to recover, but is also coping with the news of this tragic crash.

"I'm going to keep him in my thoughts and prayers," Chinn said.

Visitation for David Austin will be Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Swaren Funeral Home in Ramsey.

His funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the North Harrison High School gym.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Police say that neither teen had on a seat belt.
