Petunias Becoming Ever More Colorful

By Cindi Sullivan

(LOUISVILLE, June 14th, 2004) -- If you're looking for a beautiful, colorful flower for your garden, WAVE 3's Garden Talk expert Cindi Sullivan has the perfect answer.

The Wave Petunia has certainly made its mark on the annual flower industry. The original Purple Wave came on strong, and its popularity certainly hasn't let up. But the developers of the Wave Petunia haven't been resting on their laurels.

Wave Petunias are available in a lot of colors other than purple.

Jim Wallitsch from Wallitsch Garden Center tells the story. "You had the original Wave Petunia that came out with the Purple Wave, which is real low spreading. After that one they came out with one they call 'Tidal Wave,' which is a much taller variety of spreading petunia. And then last year or so they came out with another, newer one, they call 'Easy Wave,' which is sort of in between."

Wallitsch says Wave Petunias are easy to grow in the right weather conditions. "Hot, dry weather is preferred for all of your petunias."

The color scheme for the Wave Petunia has changed a lot and increased dramatically over the years. It's a great example of how the science and technology of horticulture has improved the plants that we bring home to our gardens.
