VINE GROVE, KY (WAVE) - The family of 19-year-old Shelby Langley spent their Labor Day weekend planning a funeral, after police say his friend accidentally shot and killed him.
"He pulled the trigger and hit Shelby in the back of the head," said Patty Goodman, Langley's aunt.
Goodman describes what happened inside a rural Meade County home. Police say a friend was helping Langley with fall cleaning Thursday evening.
When he pulled a gun off the rack to clean it, investigators say he accidentally pulled the trigger.
"When the bullet entered it had so much heat that it had destroyed a lot of the brain cells and the prognosis wasn't good," his Mom, Sandy Sharp, said.
Early Saturday morning, Shelby passed away.
He was 19-years-old, but as his God Mother explains, he had overcome so much and had a full life ahead of him.
"He was a cancer survivor, a volunteer fire fighter, had a job that he loved, got his dream car last year from his mommy and dad, and was getting ready to start Spencerian College this month. He had his life planned out," his God Mother Suzie Sharp said.
He was well known and well regarded, his family said.
"They had to open up two conference rooms just to house all the kids and the parents and the grandparents that came," Sandy Sharp said.
For Goodman, it hits especially close to home. Her daughter was killed in a car crash several years ago, and was Shelby's best friend.
"He and my daughter were close and now they're in heaven together," Goodman said, fighting back tears.
Services for Langley have been set.
Visitation will be held Tuesday at Coffey and Chism Funeral Home located at 769 Highland Avenue in Vine Grove from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.
Langley's funeral will be held Wednesday at 11:00 am at St. Brigid Catholic Church located at 314 East Main Street in Vine Grove.
Police say they are investigating the shooting as accidental.
