LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Frazier Rehab Institute's Spinal Cord Medicine Program is a beacon of hope for patients around with the world.
It's the lead of six centers that make up the Neuro Recovery Network offering patients with spinal cord injuries cutting edge therapies that often lead to patients regaining incredible mobility, even for some, the ability to walk.
Tyler Winklepleck was told he'd be in a wheelchair the rest of his life after he became paralyzed in a car crash. It happened the last day of his senior year in high school, May 2011.
Tyler's mom Stephanie drives him to Frazier, a four hour trip here and back each day. After aggressive therapies at Frazier Tyler is standing and walking with a cane.
"Tyler's a miracle," Stephanie said, "It's amazing the things they do here at Frazier, amazing."
The therapies can take four to six months to complete. For people who live out of town the cost can be tremendous considering all the over night stays and loss of work.
Frazier rehab is hosting a fundraiser to help people like Tyler who live in areas of the world that make the therapy impossible without financial support.
Casino Night with Frazier Rehab Institute is Friday September 14 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Mellwood Art Center. For more information call 502-582-7676 or email cynthia.norton@jhsmh.org. If you would like to purchase tickets online, click here.
